At some point last night, it started snowing. When I woke up and looked outside, I decided to check the school closings before waking the kids up. I knew I'd have no problem going back to sleep but once the kids are up, they're up. I come downstairs and find Jacob watching cartoons on the couch. I turn to NBC and wait for the closings to start over since we're at the beginning of the alphabet. The schools jump over our district and I tell Jacob, who is anxiously awaiting word that there's no school, that he needs to get some breakfast because he's got school. He's more than mad. In all actuality, there really wasn't a reason to close school. We only got a couple of inches. What surprised me was how many people were mad that there was school today. For crying out loud people. Grow a pair and get the kids to school.
I was really surprised when Mike called around 2:30 to tell me that he'd gotten an e-mail saying all evening activities through our school district were cancelled. It had stopped snowing and the plows were active. WTF? It normally isn't an issue but the boys had a Pack meeting tonight. Mike decided to call our Packmaster to see if there'd be a meeting tonight. Turns out there was but it had to be moved since the school would be officially closed. How annoying.
When I picked the kids up from school, everyone was buzzing about how there wouldn't be school on Thursday. What? Why? Well, I guess there's going to be this big ice storm Thursday that will cancel school. The teachers were all talking about it. Ugh. I really hope there's no ice storm on Thursday because we'd like to leave for Illinois on Friday and Hannah has her holiday party Thursday afternoon. I guess Jacob has a class pizza party that afternoon as well. In any case, if it's going to do something, I'd rather it just snow. Ice sucks.
I'm so tired of winter already.
I'm just a nurse raising a husband, three teenagers, a cat, and two mini schnauzers in Tornado Alley. There are many shenanigans.

Snowy Tuesday
Last night, they said it would snow today. It certainly is. It started around 10am and hasn't let up. I can't believe they hadn't pre-treated the roads...they were pretty slick when I left my MOPS meeting at 11:30. It's days like this that I miss my old Cavalier. Ugh I loved that car.
Oh, sweet! A salt truck just went down the street. That'll help.
Last night, we had round two of Jiu Jitsu testing. We did all of the stand-up techniques. That would be where someone is coming after you and you take them to the ground. Not my favorite thing in the world. Mostly because I'm afraid of hurting my partner. There are also three moves where you head to the ground while either you (or your partner) is in a headlock. Those really crank on your neck. This week, we'll be working on Side-Mount techniques and then move on to the Guard stuff. We have to move quickly since most of us will be out of town for Christmas and the tapes have to be in by December 31st.

Update...and Some Photos
We had a very uneventful Thanksgiving this year...not that it was a bad thing. I hate to admit that it was really nice to just spend the time with Mike and the kids. As always, I made way too much food but it was very tasty. I promise we'll be heading to Illinois for the holidays.
When I saw all of the snow yesterday, I was happy that we weren't on the road for it. We didn't get much here...about an inch or so, but it was enough for the kids to have fun playing in all day long.
I finally got around to taking some pictures of Hannah at gymnastics. She's getting a lot better and she really likes it. (She's the one in the bright blue leo)

I've also spent the past week being sucked into the vampire world that is Twilight. I was bound and determined to not like it, but I wound up enjoying it immensely. I read all four books in less than seven days. How crazy is that?!?
Anyway, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and I promise to post more soon.

Some other stuff has gone on since my last post, too. Daniel had his second grade program. It was super cute. They even learned the School House Rock Preamble song. Daniel has taught it to Jacob and Hannah as well. At any given point in time, you can hear someone singing, "We the people, in order to form a more perfect union..." LOL!!!

Snow Day
Well, we got one. Another snow day. I'm thinking that it's not because of the snow because we only got 2 inches or so (just north of us got 8+ inches). It rained/sleeted all day yesterday and I'm sure it froze under all that snow. I haven't talked to Mike to see how his ride into work was, but I'm sure it wasn't fun. It's all blowing around now, so there's very little in the driveway and I'm sure that if I tried to shovel it, more would just blow in. So I'm just going to leave it and see what happens. The road in front of our house is completely covered and it doesn't look like many have decided to go out. I know that I don't have any plans to go anywhere today.
Hannah's mad about the snow day because she was scheduled to have her Kindergarten Roundup this morning (can you believe that? Hannah in kindergarten!). She was so excited about "going to kindergarten" and now she thinks she's never going to get to go. I keep telling her that I know that they'll reschedule it and that she'll get to go on another day but she doesn't believe me.
Daniel lost another tooth yesterday and was more than excited to find out that the Tooth Fairy had visited him (despite the threats of sending an e-mail to her telling her not to come because he wouldn't go to sleep). The Tooth Fairy almost forgot about it (it's happened before) but remembered in the nick of time. So I was woken up this morning by Daniel, baggie with a dollar in it in hand, letting me know that he loves the Tooth Fairy. He's too cute.
So, that's about it from the Frozen Tundra. Man, it's cold outside. The bright side is that I have a pot of chicken soup on the stove and if I can find some yeast, I'll be making a challah later. It seems like we eat chicken soup a lot. Okay, so we do. LOL!

Thursday Already?
First...HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUE!!!!!
Anyhoo...I'm leaving for my weekend at Sue's tomorrow morning. I almost feel like I skipped a week somewhere because the last time I checked, I was leaving in two weeks. LOL! The kids keep asking me if they can go too (no!). I finally did map out the way from the airport to your place, Sue. I told you I'd do it before Friday morning! Dad says that he thinks it's right. I guess we'll see! All I can say is that I'm really excited about it. I've never taken a trip, just me, without the kids. Even if it is just for a weekend. Should be a lot of fun.
It snowed about 3 inches last night and now it's freaking cold. Oh darn...I'm going to miss the coldest temps of the winter so far this weekend...you can keep your single digit temps. LOL! For some reason, the kids have a snow day...not sure if there was ice or something under all of that snow (haven't been out yet today) so maybe that's it. I can't imagine they cancelled school just for a couple of inches of snow.
I got a call from the school the other day saying that Daniel had bumped into something and his two front teeth went through his bottom lip. There was a big deal about his coat being covered in blood (it wasn't but whatever), so I went and picked him up. Poor Daniel. Two days later, he still has a bit of a fat lip. You can clearly see where his teeth went into his lip. Looks awfully painful. At least it happened at school this time!
Other than that and the usual TKD stuff going on, that's about it from here for now. I need to get on the ball and get some laundry switched over and get the kids fed some lunch.

Waiting For Spring...
According to the news, we got about 6 inches last night, which is a lot more than the 2-4 they were calling for. It's all blowing around so it's really hard to tell just how much is out there. To top it off, there's a lovely layer of sleet under it all, so I'm thinking that I really don't want to go out there. Boy, am I happy that I went grocery shopping yesterday.
As soon as the alarm went off this morning, I turned the TV on to check for school closings. The first channel I came to was Fox and they had a thing at the bottom of the TV, so I waited. There it was...no school...so, after a groggy conversation with Mike, I went back to sleep.
Jacob came in at 8:10 asking why I hadn't woken him up yet. I told him there was no school today and he could either go back to bed or watch cartoons for a few minutes. He mumbled something and closed the door. 8:15 am, Jacob comes back in and asks if I'm sure he doesn't have school. I say yes, I'm sure. He leaves. 8:20 am, Jacob's back again asking how I know. I tell him that I saw the closing on TV. At 8:25, Jacob comes in and asks if the TV could be wrong.
At this point, I figure it's easier to go on the computer and show him from the websites. The first one I come to is our ABC affiliate, since I'm on their e-mail lists for school closings. No e-mail. Hmmm. I go to their website and look at the closings...our school district isn't on there. Now, I'm freaking out on the inside. I look up our Fox affiliate...there's our school district. Interesting. Maybe I'll get answers if I go to the district's website. There in big, bold letters it says NO SCHOOL TODAY. Phew. Jacob's really angry that he doesn't have school today. LOL!
What's sad is they also cancelled MOPS for today. Hannah was sad for a few minutes and then she got over it. She loves MOPS and I feel bad when she can't go.
How's everyone else's snow today?

GGGGRRRRR!!!!!
I'm getting really angry with Blogger right now...it won't let me see my blog (or anyone else's for that matter) but for some strange reason, I can post.
Anyway, we ended up with about 2 inches of snow yesterday. The side streets are still snow covered but the main streets are fine.
The kids are loving the TiVo. Hannah's really excited about the fact that I've been recording her favorite show, The Upside Down Show, for her. It is so funny to listen to her watching that show. She laughs hystarically, which is really funny. The boys love Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go! but it only comes on at 5:30am. Now they can watch it. I've been able to see more episodes of Dr. Phil this week than I have in the past year because of the TiVo. What's cool about it is that the TiVo will record programs that it thinks that I might like based on what I have recorded in the past. I'm having such a good time playing with it!
I think I'm going to make a cheesecake today. Our newspaper printed a recipe from a guy who imitates restaurant recipes and they printed the Cheesecake Factory's White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake recipe...or at least the imitation recipe for it. It looks really tasty, so I think I'll try it.

These Guys Don't Fool Around...
I'm outside trying to shovel out the driveway (still no gas for the snow blower) when I see the snow plow come down the street. Nice guy that he is, he dumps about 2 feet of snow at the foot of the driveway. Thanks, man. I look down the cul-du-sac and see two neighbors heading for our house...one with a shovel and one with a Bobcat. "Don't worry," one neighbor says. "We'll get you out!" And they proceed to dig us out. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it for myself! Here are some pictures!

Date Night
Even with all of the snow, Mike and I were able to go out. The kids actually said goodbye to us but were quick to go back to show Anna some toys. LOL!
The roads were icky but passable. He took me to a restaurant called 40 Sardines. They had the most unusual salads and entrees. Mike got a pear and cranberry salad with a citrus vinaigrette (ever hear of that before?!?) and I got a grilled artichoke and watercress salad. My chicken also came with fried artichokes, which were really tasty. I don't think I've eaten so many artichokes, ever! LOL! Neither one of us was brave enough to order the wild boar but we talked a lot about it! I love going to places like this...places that we could NEVER take the kids. After dinner, it was still snowing so we decided to head right home.
We come home and the house is actually cleaner than when we left. I love Anna. Not only is she really good with the kids, but she cleans, too!!! :) Love that.
BTW, if I had to guess, I'd say we got about 5 inches of snow last night.

Are You Kidding Me?!?
It's snowing...again!!!! This better not make us cancel date night...Mike was going to take me out for our anniversary and I don't want Anna out if the roads are bad. It wasn't supposed to start until after 6 and it started about an hour ago. So far, our street is clear but who knows what it'll be like 3 hours from now!!! GRRRR!!! They're saying 4-6 inches before tomorrow morning.

Sleet Day
I can't call it a snow day because it's not. It's not doing a whole lot right now, the sleet comes in waves, and right now, it's stopped. According to our ABC guy, the precip will continue to be sleet and we're expected to get about 1 to 2 more inches before this evening. I haven't heard anything about the 4 inches of snow that we were suppossed to get tomorrow, but we'll see.
All I know is I have a big pot of chicken soup on the stove (I was finally able to use one of the chickens that had been just screaming to be made into soup), kids playing with moon sand at the kitchen table and a husband taking a nap on the couch. Did I mention we're all still in pj's? LOL! I love days like this!

Winter's Back
2:30pm Update...16 degrees and the snow keeps going back and forth between snow and sleet. The road in front of the house is covered in white but the grass is surprisingly bare. Not looking forward to getting Jacob from school.
11:15am Update...It is now snowing and it's 16 degrees. And, I have to go out in it to pick Daniel up from school. :( I wonder what my Virginia friends think about that!!! LOL!
I had the hardest time pulling myself out of bed this morning. It took every ounce of energy to not go back to bed once I took a look outside. It had been drizzling, and with the temperatures dropping (we were 60 yesterday and right now it's 19 degrees), there was a nice coating of ice on the ground. I kept thinking that the boys were sleeping so nicely and it would be okay for them to miss a day of school. Then I realized that's a dumb thought and went to get the boys out of bed. I don't know why I didn't think to leave a little earlier because of the ice...I guess I thought that the main roads wouldn't be that bad. Once I got out of our subdivision, I made the realization that the main roads were just as slippery as the back roads. Luckily, everyone here seems to know how to drive in this stuff and were keeping a nice distance between cars and were driving about 25-30 mph, which seemed to be the safe speed. (and thank goodness for my new tires!!!)
After dropping off the boys, Hannah and I went up to get more milk and juice since once I get back from picking up Jacob this afternoon, I don't want to head out again until this stops. I have to laugh because I know that school would have been cancelled today if we were still in Virginia. LOL. Welcome back to the world of "it's winter...it snows...it gets icy...deal with it." LOL!!! Right now, we've got some sleet. I wonder if it'll turn to snow?
