Race Day

Today was the day of the Big Race. We arrived early to enjoy the pancake and sausage breakfast before racing started. Poor Daniel...his car consistently came in last...of course, so did Jacob but his had more of a fighting chance. At least both cars crossed the finish line. Here are some pictures...

Daniel's Cheesemobile crosses way after everyone else's car. You can see the rankings on the board.

Congratulation. The cars look great. And, it looks like the boys had a great time. Pinewood Derby is fun. Next year you'll do better.

The Pinewood Derby is stressful! LOL! Luckily, our pack, while very competitive, was more about the cars than how well they raced. The boys got a lot of compliments on them. Especially Daniel. He got a lot of praise for his car (even though it barely crossed the finish line). The boys were really good, too. They weren't upset that they didn't place. I think they were just really proud of their cars.

They look great! There are all kinds of tricks of the trade with the Pinewood Derby. You can't tell me those kids know all that stuff on their own. That's the only thing I didn't like about it. It should be about the kids doing them. Maybe together at scouts.

I tried to make sure the kids did most of the work...they sanded the cars and painted them (granted, Mike and I did a lot of the detail work, but they were hovering over us like first-time parents over their baby)...some of the work I didn't want them to do (like cutting them or putting the wheels on) but I made sure they did a lot of the work. In hindsight, it was fun to do and we all got to work as a family to get them done.

There are tons of books and whatnot on how to build your Pinewood Car for the best speed. It's kind of silly, really. Although I'm sure Jacob would really get into the engineering side of it all. Daniel would just want the best looking car.
