Hey...What Is That Thing?

The other night, I was out checking out the flowers in the garden when I spotted something. I thought Jacob might like to see it, so I ran in to get him. Luckily, it was still there when we came back.

We both stood back and watched as what I thought was a hummingbird, went from flower to flower, sucking nectar with it's long tongue. Jacob looked closer and told me that it couldn't be a hummingbird because it had antenna. Hmmm. But it's the right size and hovers and acts just like one. After it had buzzed Jacob and completely scared the daylights out of him, we went it to see if we could find out what it was.

We looked up hummingbirds but couldn't find anything that looked like what we saw. We looked up moths but couldn't find anything that looked like what we saw. After a while, we gave up for the night and decided we'd give it another try later.

Jacob had mentioned to his teacher that we had seen something in the backyard that looked like a hummingbird but had antenna. She quickly said that it was probably a hummingbird moth. Hmmm. Never heard of one. As soon as Jacob got home from school, he quickly Googled it and, just like that, was a picture of what was buzzing around in the garden. You can take a peek right here. (if you click the top picture of the white-lined sphinx moth after going to the page, you'll see more photos of it.)

It was pretty cool to see and I hope that he comes back.

Actually, while it looked just like that, it wasn't freaky when it was flying. It seriously looked like a hummingbird. Gigantoid moth!
